Ancient olive trees

September 2018 | Места | Mallorca

Sculptural, inspiring, sometimes rather eerie... no two olive trees are alike. In the Tramuntana mountains, they twist in shapes transcending time and space.

Solitary and untamed, they never form forests. Here they have been grown for centuries on terraces buttressed by dry stone walls built to take advantage of every bit of land. Ancient olive trees may be seen in the Biniaraix ravine and along the way to Lluc, where people imagine faces or animals in their gnarled trunks. The oldest olive trees have been given names of their own, like Na Flamarades (Son Brull) and Es Camell (Camí de Muleta). This is a token of people’s gratitude to a tree that has historically helped to nourish Mallorca’s poorest families and that has long been a symbol of peace.
