Barcelona’s most up-to-the-minute emerging fashion is not to be seen on the runways or in boutiques. The most innovative designers are at the fashion markets and pop-ups that dot the city’s calendar. These are events where you can make contact with creators and get to know the inner workings of the Barcelona that’s been reigning as a European design capital for decades.

For vintage fashion, it’s a good idea to visit is the Lost&Found Market, which is held once each quarter in public places like the Estació de França. It recalls big markets such as Amsterdam’s Queensday or the garage sales held in the U.S.A.

Another must is the Flea Market and its close relation Fleadonia. The Flea Market Barcelona is held on the second Sunday of each month at Plaça Blanquerna, behind the Maritime Museum. The Fleadonia Market, which takes place on the first Sunday of each month and features antique and second-hand items, is held at Plaça de Salvador Seguí and runs all day long. Both events are attended by the most modern people in the city, looking for old objects of interest. The vintage look has lots of followers.

At the first weekend of each month, the Palo Alto Market sets up its stalls. Design, art, music and gastronomy, all in one, for a four-euro entry fee. Palo Alto opened recently in Barcelona and it is based on the popular ‘street market’ concept but with a clearly Mediterranean air. This sophisticated outdoor event combines talent and sensitivity.

Once every quarter, the former France Train Station –Estació de França– becomes a meeting point for design. The event is called Station Design Barcelona and it is a market for emerging fashion, the most ground-breaking design and live music. Check up on the exact dates when it’s to be held to avoid missing it.

The craft revolution
The CraftRoom is the foremost event for the display and sale of hand-made products, featuring authentic handicrafts and Catalan crafted brand-name products. Held on three previous occasions, it brings together over a hundred enterprises devoted to fashion accessories, jewellery, household products, gift items, decorative articles and more.

This event, organized by the Generalitat of Catalonia through the Consortium for Commerce, Crafts and Fashion of Catalonia (CCAM), has become a major space for contact between craftspeople and the public.
