Catalonia: a constellation

The 2016 edition of the world-famous Michelin Guide continues to hold the great Catalan restaurants in high esteem and Catalonia is once again the area in Spain with the most Michelin stars.

This year again, Catalonia is Spain’s leading Michelin star-holder, which is proof positive of its highly acclaimed cuisine’s unflagging vitality. No less than 50 of its restaurants boast a total of 60 coveted stars.

The Roca brothers’ celebrated establishment El Celler de Can Roca in Girona, rated as the world’s best restaurant, and Carme Ruscalleda’s Sant Pau in Sant Pol de Mar, remain on the highest level with three stars each. Six other restaurants have won two stars and 42 more can boast one star.

Indeed, Catalonia has long been a fundamental region in world gastronomy. This is shown by historical documents like “The Book of Sent Soví”, a collection of cooking recipes dating from the year 1324 which marks the origin of the Catalan culinary tradition based on local products of the land and the sea, extending all the way to today’s gourmet revolution spearheaded by chef Ferran Adrià at his former restaurant El Bulli.
