Mainly devoted to farming and livestock, most of the territory of Pallars Sobirà is protected: the Aigüestortes and Sant Maurici Lake National Park, the High Pyrenees Natural Park, the Boumort Natural Hunting Reserve and many other beautiful areas are ideal for the enjoyment of winter sports and especially adventure sports, for which the region is internationally known. The highlight of each year is the Noguera Pallaresa International Kayak Rally, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2013.

For people who prefer less strenuous activities, Pallars Sobirà is a great place for hiking. The Regional Council has conditioned some splendid routes through valleys and mountains, with lakes, churches, medieval bridges, prehistoric vestiges and other attractions along their course. In short, unspoilt nature with cultural features as well.

Comfortable accommodation of excellent quality, especially in country house hotels, and delicious cuisine based on fresh local ingredients assure you of an unforgettable stay.

The salt of life

In the Pallars Sobirà region, be sure to visit Gerri de la Sal, an extremely interesting heritage site. Highlights here are the medieval bridge, the Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria (9th, 11th and 14th centuries), and the ancient saltworks, which gave the town its special look. The local salt spring exploited by the evaporation system was the main source of income of the town and the region at large for many years.

A saltworks facility that is still operated by the traditional method can be visited in Gerri, as well as the Salt Museum, located in the old Alfolí or salt storehouse, the largest civil building in Pallars, to learn about the historical process of producing, transforming, storing and commercializing salt.
