Gastronomy is a memorable activity because of the close relationship between food and wine at the table. Catalonia has excellent still and sparkling wines and a cuisine of an equally high level. Matching food and wine here leads to unforgettable experiences for even the most demanding tastes.

People who are interested in our architectural heritage will find wineries installed in beautiful Modernista buildings in the Terra Alta region. A special route links all these “Wine Cathedrals”.

For close-to-the-soil experiences, you can take part in the harvest, learn to prune vine stocks or sleep beneath the stars in a vineyard.

There are adventurous activities as well, like taking a drive around the vineyards in a 4x4 vehicle or riding through the vines on a Segway. Imagination’s the limit!

Something for hedonists too? Sure: more and more wineries offer spa treatments linked to the world of wine. Vinotherapy, grape baths and many more relaxing proposals are other wine experiences at your disposal.

Wine, olive oil and Modernisme

The character of the wine comes from the soil from which it springs. The Priorat wines owe their taste to the local rough grey soil formed largely by slate. Foodies will enjoy the cart paths of the Wine and Olive Oil Ways, and culture lovers will like the Wine Cathedrals, which are wineries in beautiful Modernista buildings.

Try your hand at harvesting
Penedès is Catalonia’s big winegrowing area. Wineries here hold wine-experience workshops on tasting, vine pruning, grape harvesting and more. In addition to wine tastings and matchings, you can tour the vineyards on a  burricleta or “burrocycle” (an environment-friendly electric bike) or attend a concert amidst the vines.

Try out our highest-growing wines
In the Pallars Jussà area  in Lleida, Catalonia’s highest vineyards grow at an altitude of 1,000 metres. The extreme climate and the calcareous soil here give these wines of the “DO” Costers del Segre their characteristic taste. If you want to savour a gastronomic treat, be sure not to miss the local olive oil, which ranks among the world’s best.

Tastes of the mountains and the sea
Entertaining dramatized tours of wineries, relaxing vinotherapy treatments, nighttime walks through the vineyards... Everything is possible near Catalonia’s emblematic Cap de Creus Natural Park, set between the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean Sea. The “icing on the cake”can be the Dalí Triangle for a closer look at the world-famous Catalan painter’s life and work.

12 ways to taste Catalonia
One of the best ways of approaching Catalonia is through its great wines. The  12 Denominations of Origin (DO) invite visitors to enjoy a wide range of experiences with wine as the common denominator.
