Barcelona. Urban sculpture

August 2012 | Места | Barcelona

Barcelona has democratized art by taking it out to the streets. In every tourist’s album you can find Botero’s Cat and Miró’s Woman and Bird...

All over the city of Barcelona, the visitor is sure to come across outdoor sculptures. Indeed, sculptures now form part of the collective memory and they help to some extent to humanize the rather dizzying pace of city life.

In the mid 1980s, when Pasqual Maragall was the mayor of the city, an outdoor sculpture programme was implemented here in order to beautify Barcelona for the 1992 Summer Olympics. The installation of contemporary art in public places was then a very innovative experience and it drew some of the big names in Catalan, Spanish and international sculpture, like Llimona, Muñoz and Lichtenstein.
