The Museu Picasso occupies several mansions at Carrer Montcada, all built in the 13th and 14th centuries and rebuilt in the 18th. The Palau ("palace") Berenguer d’Aguilar is a building with a Gothic façade that has undergone several reforms, the most extensive in 1960-63 and 1981 to condition it for the works of the great artist Pablo Picasso. Other parts of the museum are the Palau del Baró de Castellet, which takes its name from the title of its one-time owner, Marià Alegre d’Aparici i d’Amat; the Palau Meca (with its 14th-century ceilings); the Casa Mauri, which was built on the structure of a villa from ancient Roman times located in what were then the outskirts of the colony of Barcino; and the Palau de les Finestres, also of ancient Roman origin and rebuilt, like the other buildings, in the 18th century, where the museum's temporary exhibitions are held.
