Telefónica
Civil architecture

Before the construction of the Azca buildings, the "mainmast of Madrid" was the Telefónica Tower, on the Gran Vía. When people came from the villages to visit Madrid, they raised their eyes in surprise and admiration, beholding this 14-story building that was originally topped off in a rather bizarre way. This building, standing 81 metres in height, was constructed in the record time of four years under the direction of Ignacio de Cárdenas, following the design by the U.S. architect Louis S. Weeks. This is the site of the Telefónica Foundation for Art and Technology, which contains an interesting exhibition on the history of telecommunications.
