Founded in 1910 with a philosophy open to creation, thinking and the promotion of the artistic avant-gardes. In short, it was the fruit of the ideas of one of the most innovative centres of learning in Spain's history: the Free Educational Institution, which had been founded in 1876. Its goals were to supplement university education through the creation of an appropriate intellectual atmosphere and a suitable living place for students, in addition to promoting a constant exchange between the sciences and arts. This ideology, which was very progressive for its times, helped the Student Residence to create many of the key talents of Spain in the past century: Luis Buñuel, Rafael Alberti, Federico García Lorca, Salvador Dalí, Severo Ochoa and others. It was also regularly attended by other people as well, such as Juan Ramón Jiménez, José Ortega y Gasset, Pedro Salinas, Manuel de Falla, Ramón Gómez de la Serna, etc.
