Ibiza is an ideal place for cyclists, both because of its strategic location in the Mediterranean, a mild climate even in winter and an extensive network of trails and B roads. During the quieter months of the year, from September to May, it is a pleasure to pedal along routes which are often signposted and discover the variety of scenery the White Island offers.

The bicycle is an ideal medium for travelling around the town of Ibiza, which has several kilometres of cycle lanes running down the long Paseo de Joan Carles I, the large avenues and the town’s port. Bicycle parks are to be found in most public squares and busy places, and bike owners can use Biciregistro, a service for registering their vehicle and trying to recover bikes that have disappeared.

Cyclists who prefer to use their bikes in a relaxed manner can use cycle lanes, which often run alongside the sea, in the main tourist resorts like Santa Eulària or Sant Antoni. They can also ride on quite easy routes with many scenic and gastronomy attractions, like the one surrounding the fertile plain of Pla de Corona, in Santa Agnès.

The most demanding cyclists can sign up for some of the competitions organised throughout the year, both in Ibiza and in Formentera. Coinciding with Easter – in March or April – the Vuelta a Ibiza en Mountain Bike MMR, or mountain bike tour of Ibiza, is held. It is one of the most consolidated BTT trials on a national and international level, with a crowning stage of 80.5 km and a cumulative elevation gain of 1,980 m. A thousand participants enjoy three days, and three stages, of mountain biking in a wonderful natural setting, whilst a programme of activities is organised for their companions so that they can enjoy their holiday to the full.

October is the month of the Vuelta a Ibiza Internacional Campagniolo, which combines bicycle touring and competition, perfect for all levels, and attended by some of the best racers in the world. The tour starts with a route with two timed routes, one of them a surprise, and on the following day the Fiestas Patronales de Sant Rafel Trophy is disputed, consisting of 49.2 kilometres that run along a circuit closed to traffic.

The quantity and quality of sporting competitions on all of the islands has boosted the Islas Baleares Sports Destination tourist brand, borne of the will to join the forces of the public and private sector and raise the perceived value of the islands as a top sporting destination and venue for big competitions.

Cycling on Formentera
Formentera also  has a good network of bicycle touring routes, with 12 routes and 36 km, with signposts. The main competitions are held in October: the BTT Vuelta Cicloturista a Formentera, with two modalities: one non-competitive bicycle tourism race, consisting of three stages and a total of 113 km and an elevation gain of 1,186 m – and the BTT La Mola, a race included in the Challenge del Campeonato Pitiuso BTT, with a harder route, for experienced sportspeople. An event that runs through the scenery of Sant Francesc, La Mola and La Savina. And in the same month, the village of Es Pujols hosts the Illa de Formentera Triathlon, in which the participants compete in swimming, cycling and running races, and can choose the Sprint and Olympic modalities.
