You don’t only get to know a city by visiting its museums and landmarks: to really get acquainted with the spirit of a place, you have to visit its shops – and those of Barcelona have lots of personality!

Catalonia’s long tradition of industry, design and commerce can be seen in the web of retail establishments that fi ll the city to overflowing. To acknowledge their efforts, the City Council grants the Best Shop Prizes each year in several different categories, including the Best Display Window.

It may be its architectural wealth, its culinary offering, its excellent climate or all this combined, but the fact is that Barcelona is Europe’s fourth most visited city and a world leader in luxury brand establishments, whose number is constantly growing.

Generally speaking, the big fi rms prefer to set up their flagship location at the exclusive Passeig de Gràcia due to the large increase in tourism. Indeed, the number of non-EU visitors to Barcelona rose 32% in 2013. Tourists from Russia and China headed this growth, with 54% and 53% increases, respectively.

Several of the world’s most admired and visited buildings worldwide are also located here, making Passeig de Gràcia the most travelled street in Spain in addition to one of the most beautiful.

There are other indispensable areas for luxury shopping too, however. In the Turó Park area, for example, there are exclusive Spanish and international design boutiques and the most select decoration shops.

Likewise, the stretch of Avinguda Diagonal between Passeig de Gràcia and Plaça Francesc Macià has numerous luxury establishments waiting to be discovered.

In addition to luxury firms of worldwide fame and exclusive multi-brand shops, in Barcelona there is local design and crafting that is well worth seeing.

Don’t miss the Shopping Guide at the end of this book, where you’ll find the best selection of establishments carrying fashion, accessories, jewellery, decoration and gourmet articles – products for which Barcelona has long had a name for quality.
