The prestigious Michelin Guide’s 2015 edition maintains a high regard for the gastronomic greats of Catalonia, which continues to be the region of Spain with the biggest number of stars.

In 2015 Catalonia is once again the Spanish region holding the most Michelin stars, confirming the continued excellent health of cuisine here. Specifically, Catalan restaurants have 50 of these coveted distinctions, well ahead of the Basque Country with its 21 stars.

In Catalonia, Celler de Can Roca –the Roca Brothers’ restaurant in Girona–, and Sant Pau, Carme Ruscalleda’s restaurant in Sant Pol de Mar, maintain the highest honour: 3-star rating. The other restaurants with three stars in Spain are still Martín Berasategui, Akelarre and Arzak in Guipúzcoa; Azurmendi in Vizcaya and Quique Dacosta in Alicante and DiverXo in Madrid.

But what do the celebrated Michelin stars actually mean? The definitions in the Guide were established in 1936 and still apply today: one star means “very good cuisine in its category”; two mean “excellent cuisine worth a detour”, and three mean “exceptional cuisine worth a trip in itself”.

Barcelona stands in the forefront of world gastronomy. It has a number of well-known chefs and its delectable cuisine is now famous around the globe.
