localpopulationduringthesieges
andconstantincursionsbyBerber
pirates, who coveted the produce
of this rich land, especially the
flour from the nearbywindmills.
In the mid-16th century, the
churchwashalfdestroyedduring
an intense attach by the corsairs,
but the Spanishcrowndecided to
rebuilt and fortify it, just like the
churchesofSantAntoni,SantJor-
di andSantMiquel andthecitadel
of Dalt Vila. The new church was
inaugurated in 1568 and had de-
fence cannons and a permanent
sentry guard. When harassment
byenemyshipsceased,thechurch
was extendedwith the porch and
two chapels, shaping its present-
day structure.
Puig de Missa is also home
to the Ethnographic Museum of
Ibiza, an ancient peasant house
containing exhibitions and im-
ages of the tools, instruments and
implements that explaintheroots
of the island’s traditional culture,
becausethelivingandthedeadar-
rived here via a network of paths
that connected the main houses
that were isolated in the munici-
pality of Santa Eulària, leading to
this emblematic hill.—
