Date: 1902-1961. Period: Contemporary. In 1886 St John Bosco, the founder of the Salesians, was offered a plot of land on the peak of the Collserola mountains for the erection of a church dedicated to the Sacred Heart. A small chapel that still exists today was built here first. In 1902 the construction began of the great expiatory church, a monumental building in the Neo-Gothic style crowned by a bronze statue of the Sacred Heart. The church was completed in 1961. A lift allows visitors to reach the top of the church, at a height of 575 metres above sea level, from where there is a breathtaking view of the city. |
